I have recently begun listening to pod casts of famous and mildly famous preachers speaking about many different topics. I listened to one podcast about how the media feeds on our internal longing for happiness and the use of temporary means to fill an unfulfillable hole. The pastor was speaking during the holiday season about how the christmas season is taken advantage of by marketers to prey on our insecurity and desire for happiness. The media knows that we are weak and knows that a majority of us go to temporary and artificial means to find happiness. One example of this is the most recent Super Bowl commercials. A few were actually amazing (like this one. and this one.)And the use of two commercials that included the words "God" and "pray" in a positive way were AWESOME. But others of them...lets just say they failed. First off, the GoDaddy commercial. First of all, Go Daddy's commercials have always disgusted me. But this one, wasn't even tasteful! There was no actual theme to it, no appeal, just a nasty closeup of noisy kissing. GROSS. It also shows how apparently our media thinks smart men and women cannot be sexy. The harsh comparison is revolting. Another video that really set me on edge is not one you would expect, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H0xPWAtaa8. The reason this video upsets me is because it proves that pastor right. And I want the pastor to be right of course, but its sickening that our society is preyed upon the way they are. Marketers are like vultures and for one person to have a mind that thinks in that matter, scares me. This commercial shows that our media believes materialistic means are the only way to fill the hole of dissatisfaction in our lives. Only God can fill that hole. That's why He made us like that, so that we might always have one part of us that will always long for Him, even if we turn it down every time. It still gnaws on us.
